Touristy Sites Worth Seeing in London

posted in: Top Things to Do, Travel | 0

According to the Office of National Statistics, 17.4 million people visited London in 2014. With so many people visiting this great city, deciding which tourist sites to see on a time-sensitive trip can be tricky. Here is a list of 5 touristy London sites and whether they are worth your valuable time.

Buckingham Palace

Is it worth it?

Yes. Quintessentially British, Buckingham Palace is a must-see site for any traveler while in London. Fight the crowds to get a sweeping vantage point of the Changing of the Guard and the Queen Victoria Memorial. This spectacle of Royal Pageantry has been a London tradition since 1660. From April to July, the Changing of the Guard occurs every day at 11:30 A.M. and on alternate days the rest of the year.

Westminster Abbey and Big Ben

Is it worth it?

While the interior of Westminster Abbey is absolutely breathtaking, the long lines (queues) are excruciating during the busy season. Save your time and instead walk around the Abbey and admire its gothic façade. As you walk toward Westminster Bridge and pass the Winston Churchill statue, you will have a great view of Big Ben and the Thames.

London Eye

Is it worth it?

Depends on the weather and your time. If it is a “clear” London day, definitely take advantage of the London Eye’s 360 degree views of the city. The line for the Eye is generally fast-moving. (The Eye has 32 pods, holding at least 20 people, and is constantly moving). One revolution takes 30 minutes and an adult ticket is £23.00.

River Cruise

Is it worth it?

Yes, weather permitting. A London river cruise is the perfect way to enjoy the changing Thames waterfront and the major London sites along the river. You will pass ornate Victorian architecture as well as gleaming new skyscrapers. At the end of the cruise, you will see the Tower of London and the London Bridge, two historic sites that are great to see from the water and away from the crowds on land.

Bus Tour

Is it worth it?

Absolutely, 100% yes. While some people view bus tours as a tourist trap, London’s bus tours are a reliable way to hop-on and off at many of the city’s major attractions. On a busy schedule, a bus tour is the best way to get around the city (above ground) and learn London’s history from knowledgeable guides.

Side note:

Explore

Although you definitely want to see the postcard sites of London, there’s more to the city than just seeing its main sites. Some of my favorite memories of London are just wondering around the city. Find a neighborhood like Kensington and spend some time getting to know the area and enjoying a nice, relaxing lunch. Find a quaint pub, like St. George’s Tavern founded in 1873, and talk with the restaurant’s staff on their favorite things to do in their own city.
